James Lowe, our resident conductor, returns to conduct the NBS for the first concert of this season. We open the concert with Kabalevsky's Colas Breugnon Overture. Colas Breugnon is the name by which his opera 'The Craftsman of Clamecy' is usually known outside of Russia and it is the tale of a sculptor (Colas Breugnon) who recalls his experiences at the end of his life.

Dvorak's Cello Concerto was written in 1895 during his last year in America and is full of nostalgia for the composer's Czech homeland. The impulse to write it came from hearing Victor Herbert performing his own 2nd cello concerto in 1894. Dvorak had previously thought of the cello as a chamber or orchestral instrument and no one, he told a correspondant, was more surprised than he was when he found himself beginning to sketch out a concerto that November! We are joined by internationally renowned cellist and former Young Musician of the Year Winner, Guy Johnston.

Nielsen's 4th Symphony, 'The Inextinguishable', was completed in 1916. It is in four movements played without breaks and is a work which the composer explained "is meant to represent all that we feel and think about life in the most fundamental sense of the word, that is, all that has the will to live and move".
